MITCHELL FAMILY

1.                  EXPERIENCE MITCHELL was born about 1609 in Leiden , Holland. He came on the ship Anne in 1623 when he was fourteen years of age. At the division of cattle in May 1627, the first lot fell to Francis Cooke and his company, one of whom was Experience Mitchell. Experience was included in the list of Freemen in 1633. He married at age nineteen and lived on Spring Hill in Plymouth. He sold his home there in 1631 and removed to the Blue Fish River in Duxbury. He was an original proprietor of Bridgewater but did not remove there until late in life, sometime after 1680.

COMMENT ON THE TWO WIVES OF

EXPERIENCE MITCHELL OF PLYMOUTH, MASS

By John B. Threlfal of Madison, Wisc.

Experience Mitchell came to Plymouth, Mass. In 1623 and is known to have had two wives. The first was Jane Cooke, daughter of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower and his wife Hester Mahieu. Experience Mitchell and Jane Cooke were married after 22 May 1627. She died at an unknown date but before 1666, and he married a second wife whose given name was Mary, her surname yet unknown. The late George E. Bowman and other genealogists of Plymouth families have rather thoroughly examined the existing records that throw light on these people. From this material it is known that Experience Mitchell had the following children:

  1. i.                     Elizabeth, b. prob. 1628; mar. 6 Dec 1645, John Washburn, Jr. She was living in Nov 1681, but he mar. (2) 1684-6, widow Elizabeth Packard. Her children, surname, Washburn, were: John, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, Jonathan, Benjamin, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, James and Sarah.

  2. ii.                   Thomas. On 8 June 1666, John Cooke, ratified and confirmed to Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell upland and meadow “given by my father ffrancis Cooke unto the aforesaid Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell” lying at Jones River in Duxbury “to be equally divided betwixt” the two. On 1 Aug 1672 Thomas Mitchell sold his share to Wright and the deed states that it was given to him by his grandfather Francis Cooke of Plymouth (Col. Deeds, 3:234). He also had land at Dartmouth, given him by his father but returned it in 1669 to his father, who the same day conveyed it to son Jacob. Thomas acknowledged the deed 1 March 1674. He apparently went to Block Island, R.I. where a Thomas Mitchell in 1678 was convicted of selling liquor to the Indians. He d. bef. May of 1687, leaving sons Thomas, John and Joseph, and perhaps daughters, assuming this to be the same Thomas (see the American Genealogist, 12:193-9).

  3. iii.                  Mary, prob. b. 1630-34; mar. 24 Dec 1652 at Plymouth, James Shaw, son of John. Three known children, surname Shaw: James, John and Anne, and probably two other daughters.

  4. iv.                 Sarah, prob. b. 1641-45; mar. John Hayward, son of Thomas and Susannah; his estate settled 1710; she d. aft. 1731; res. Bridgewater. Ten children, b. 1663-87, surname Hayward: Sarah, John, Joseph, Mary, Thomas, Benjamin, Susanna, Elizabeth, Benoni and Mercy.

  5. v.                   JACOB2

  6. vi.                 Edward, prob. b. 1644-48; mar. Mary Hayward, dau. of Thomas and sister of John; he lived with her 40 years and had no children; she d. and he mar.(2) 26 Aug 1708 Alice Bradford, b. 28 Jan 1677, dau. of Major John and Mercy (Warren) Bradford and they had three children: Mary, Alice and Edward; he d. 15 Mar 1716/17 and, she mar. (2) Deacon Joshua Hersey of Hingham; she d. 14 Jul 1746 at Hingham; Edward res. Bridgewater and raised three orphaned children of his brother Jacob.

  7. vii.                John; mar. (1) 14 Dec 1675, Mary Bonney, dau. of Thomas; had one child, Experience; Mary d. 13 May 1677 and he mar. (2) 14 Jan 1679/80, Mary Lathrop who d. 13 Feb 1679/80. He mar. (3) 24 May 1682, Mary Prior; had eight children by her: Mary, Hannah, Joseph, Elizabeth, Elizabeth again, John, Sarah and Esther. He res. Duxbury, moved to Providence, R.I. where he d. 14 Oct 1719.

  8. viii.              Hannah, mar. ca 1682 Joseph Hayward, son of Thomas and brother of John, as his third wife; had seven children: Mary, Thomas, Edward, Hannah, Susanna, Peter and Abigail; he d. 20 Jun 1718.

Bowman and most other writers have casually attributed all of these children

to Experience Mitchell’s first wife, Jane Cooke. There seems to be no evidence to support such an assumption, except in the case of Thomas, and therefore Elizabeth, who must have been the eldest in order to have married in 1645. Thomas and Elizabeth were named, perhaps, for Experiences Mitchell’s family, his father perhaps being Thomas Mitchell of Cambridge, Eng. and Amsterdam, Holland (Lora A. W. Underhill, Edward Small and His Descendants, 1934, 1:510.)

Not one of the later children bore a Cooke name, i.e. Francis, Jane or Hester;

except perhaps Jacob, named for Jane’s brother. Furthermore, daughter Elizabeth was the only child of Experience known to name a child Jane; whereas Sarah, Edward, Jacob, Hannah and John (and also Elizabeth) all named a child Mary. None of Experiences’s children named a child Jane, Francis or Hester (Esther), except Elizabeth’s Jane and John’s Esther. It appears entirely possible that Jane (Cooke) Mitchell was the mother of only Elizabeth, Thomas and perhaps Mary; and that Experience’s second wife Mary, was the mother of the others.

All of the above is circumstantial evidence; hardly the kind a genealogist prefers. By the same token, there is not even this much to support Jane as the mother of all these children, as has been carelessly assumed. Although the Society of Mayflower Descendants accepts descendants through all of the children of Experience Mitchell for membership, such an assumption would seem to be suspect. There is, of course, always the possibility that second wife Mary was herself a Mayflower daughter. (This ends the article from Mayflower Families.)

REBUTTAL to theThrelfal article (Gary Boyd Roberts). The following was submitted to me by another Mitchell genealogist and I tend to agree with these arguments. Respecting the submitter’s anomyminity, I am not revealing the name of that person. In November 1985 among the usual Thanksgiving observances there was an announcement that President William Howard Taft had been removed from the Mayflower Society “due to new information” about his ancestress Jane (Cooke) Mitchell. However, after questioning it was learned that no new information had been discovered. Some strict historians had determined that without birth dates of the children and the date of death of Jane (Cooke) Mitchell, the line was unproven except for the first two children (Elizabeth and Thomas), and possibly the third (Mary); all the rest were probably by Experience’s second wife Mary. Since this cannot be proved we are at a “stand-off.”

There is, though, a stronger possibility that Jane was the mother of them all:

1. In John Putnam Demos’ A Little Commonwealth there are more than adequate statistics to the longevity of a woman’s childbearing years. Women of the 17th century bore children at regular intervals well into their 40’s.

2. The Honorable Nathum Mitchell in his History of Bridgewater (called an unreliable source by the Mayflower Society), refers to Experience’s “wife of his old age, Mary.” Experience was probably 30 years old in 1635 and in no way could be considered old. On the other hand if he married Mary around 1666, by which time Jane was definitely dead, he was then about 62 and would have been considered old in those days.

3. The most important clue to when Jane died is found in the division of Francis Cooke’s “Rockynook” property on June 8, 1666. This was made three years after Francis Cook’s death and was divided five ways “according to our fathers reall Intent and purpose.” If Jane had been dead nearly 30 years, would his “will and intent” have been to divide his property five ways? Most probably Jane was still alive in 1663 but dead by June 8, 1666.

4. An earlier argument was that the Mitchell children did not have Cooke or Mitchell family names. The ancestry of Francis Cooke is totally unknown and it is only probable that Thomas Mitchell was the father of Experience, therefore, family names are unknown. “Experience” reflects the names being given in that age. Old family names were no longer the mode and names such as “Wrestling with the Devil” and “Love of God” were being given.

Three of the known children of Experience bore the names of Jane’s siblings. The unknown children who died in infancy may have had Cooke-Mitchell names.

All in all there is no way to be positive of the Cooke-Mitchell relationships. To change history, we must be sure of our facts and not move on personal interpretations.

2. JACOB2 Mitchell (Experience1) b. 1640-46 at Duxbury; d. Jun 1675 at Fairhaven: m. 7 Nov 1666 Susannah Pope, dau. of Thomas and Sarah (Jenney) Pope, b. ca 1649; d. Jun 1675 at Fairhaven.

Jacob was a carpenter. Before he married, he built a home for Susannah on Sandwich Street in Plymouth. It is still standing. Jacob sold his house to Jabez Howland before 1673 and the Howland family lived there until 1680. It is now called the Howland House; it has been fully restored and is maintained by the Pilgrim John Howland Society.

Jacob was given a gift of land from his father and settled at Dartmouth, now Fairhaven, MA in 1669. Jacob was an Ensign and in 1675 at the commencement of King Philip’s War, he and Susannah were attacked by Indians as they were going to the garrison house early in the morning. They lived to reach the garrison but later died of their wounds. They had sent their children to the safety of the garrison the afternoon before; after the death of their parents, the children were brought up by their uncle Edward Mitchell.

Children of Jacob and Susannah were:

          i.    Thomas b. abt. 1667/8; m. 1 Jan 1695/6 Elizabeth Kingman,  dau. of John Kingman

          ii.   3.  JACOB3

iii.    Mary b. abt. 1674/5; m. 1 Jan 1695/6 Samuel Kingman, son of John Kingman.

3. JACOB3 Mitchell (Jacob2, Experience1) b. 1672 Bridgewater, MA; d. 21 Dec 1744 No. Yarmouth, ME; m. (1st) 1 Jan 1695/6 Deliverance Kingman, dau. of John Kingman; she was b. at Weymouth, MA 12 Mar 1676 and d. at Bridgewater, MA 10 Jan 1696/7. Jacob, his brother Thomas and sister Mary married three children of John and Elizabeth Kingman in a triple wedding ceremony. Their marriage intentions listed Jacob as a “blacksmith,” Thomas as a “weaver” and Mary as a “spinster.” Deliverance died soon after the delivery of their first child. Jacob m. (2nd) 18 Nov 1701 Rebecca Cushman, dau. of Rev. Isaac and Rebecca (Harlow) Cushman, b. 30 Nov 1678; she d. 8 Jul 1756 in No. Yarmouth, ME. Some believed that Jacob’s wife Rebecca was the daughter of Isaac Cushman and Rebecca Ricard. It has more recently come to light that Isaac’s wife was more than likely Rebecca Harlow, daughter of Sgt. William and Rebecca (Bartlett) Harlow. Jacob and his second wife Rebecca lived in Plymouth where Jacob was a blacksmith and served in many town offices; he was instrumental in promoting the first school there.

Plans were made in Boston for the resettlement of the town of North Yarmouth, (now Maine), which had been destroyed during the Indian Wars. Jacob was appointed to a subcommittee to manage the prudentials of this town. He sold his property in Plymouth and removed to Maine. The new settlers drew lots for homesteads on 16 May 1727. Jacob and Rebecca came to North Yarmouth sometime after 1727. Their son, Seth, came first, followed by his parents and later by his half-brother, Jacob, son of Deliverance.

Jacob was one of the founders of the First Church* of North Yarmouth and became a deacon; other Mitchells of this line were deacons of the same church for several generations. He was elected a Selectman for the first town meeting in 1733 and held that position until his death. Jacob and his sons were extensive land owners.

* When my husband and I lived in western Maine and in New Hampshire, we passed this lovely, little white church many times on our way to visit an aunt who lived in North Yarmouth and I always thought of my Mitchell ancestors who had worshipped there. jbb

Noah was 16 when he came to North Yarmouth with his parents; five years later, he returned to Kingston and married his cousin Hannah Mitchell, dau. of Joseph and Bathsheba (Lombard) Mitchell, b. 4 May 1687 at Barnstable, MA. After the birth of their first child Noah and Hannah returned to North Yarmouth. Following the sickness, disease, fires and scarcity of food caused by the terrible droughts west of the Kennebec River in 1761 and 1762, Noah moved his family to coastal Washington county where timber and salt marshes could provide for their needs. They arrived at Pleasant River about 1766 and settled at Columbia Falls. Noah was still there in 1784. (The BangorHistorical Magazine of 27 Apr 1779) lists Noah as a resident of Addison.) It appears that he left the area by 1788. Noah had deeded his No. Yarmouth homestead to his son, John, in 1760 and the deed was signed without the signature of his wife, Hannah, so it is presumed that she had died by that time. He married (2nd) Hannah Low b. at Marshfield, MA 23 May 1717; d. at Columbia July 1782; she was the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth (Crooker) Low. There were no children from this marriage.

5. JOHN5 Mitchell (Noah4, Jacob3, Jacob2, Experience1) b, 20 Jun 1738 at North Yarmouth, ME (bapt. 27 Jul 1738); d. at Unity, ME 10 Mar 1830 in “93rd year” [g.s. Pond Cemetery] Unity; m. John and his family removed to Machias in 1765, were in Colubmia in 1769. John took part in the battle of the Margaretta and the Unity. John Mitchell was a Private, Capt. Stephen Smith’s Company; he enlisted 23 Sep 1775 and was discharged 31 Dec 1775; stationed at Machias, Lincoln Co. for defense of the seacoast. The names of those who participated in the capture of the British ships were kept quiet in fear of retaliation by the English. Had any of the Machias men been captured, they could have suffered the death penalty without trial, not even Court Martial. Many of the participants left the area for interior Maine. Presumably, John and his family left Machias sometime after 1766 or 1777.

By 1782, he and his family were living at 25 Mile Pond Town (later Unity), possibly the second settler in that town. He built the first mill in Unity in 1782. The Rev. Paul Coffin says in his Missionary Tour in Maine, 1797, Vol. 4, p. 351 “visited John Mitchell, a steady man………..He has one hundred acres of land cleared and raised one hundred and twenty bushels of corn……..He is now worried about a title to his land; as it was claimed by the Plymouth Company.”

Children of John and Mary:

  1. i.                     David Vickery, b. 31 Jul 1762 (VR) North Yarmouth; moved to Maryland

  2. ii.                   Noah, b. 7 Mar 1764 (VR) North Yarmouth; d. 1 Mar 1844 (g.s. Searsport); m. 2 Aug 1788 Mary Foss of Machias (Maine Historical Magazine 9:37.) Mary was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Mitchell) Foss. Benjamin Foss was also one of those who seized the “Margaretta.”

  3. iii.                  Mary b. c1766; m. ___________ Green; moved to New Brunswick

  4. iv.                 Isaac b. c.1768; d. 4 Jan 1835 (VR) Unity; m. int. Winslow, ME 23 Jun 1793 Hannah Vickery who d. Aug 1833 (Republican Journal, Aug 29 1833)

ix. JEREMIAH6

  1. ix.                 Alexander b. c1781; m. 2 Sep 1802 Mary Pierce (Clinton VR)

  1. JEREMIAH6 Mitchell (John5, Noah4, jacob3, Jacob2, Experience1) b. 22 Jun

1779. His birthplace is uncertain. Columbia Falls has no records prior to 1892 and there is no record of Jeremiah’s birth in Unity. Perhaps John Mitchell did not go directly to Unity from Columbia Falls. Tibbetts and Lamson in Early Pleasant River Families state that “he was at Columbia in 1769 and sometime after 1772 settled at Unity.” As it has been suggested that John arrived in Unity about 1782, there are several years when his whereabouts are uncertain. Jeremiah’s date of death is uncertain.

He m. 16 Sep 1802 Mary “Polly” Simmons, dau. of Libbeus and Mary (Dougle/Douglass) Simmons of Troy, b. 23 Jul 1784. Ralph Hillman who does lookups for the MaineGenWeb in the town of Troy has found mention of Libbeus in Troy records but is able to find very little information on the family. Early researchers cite a broken, illegible grave stone at the Mt. Rest Cemetery in Monroe. Both his stone and Polly’s have disappeared over the years, although my mother, deceased, who would be 98 years old and her sister who is now 96 years old both remembered seeing the stones in Mt. Rest Cemetery in years past.

In 1804 Jeremiah was one of the signers of a petition from the inhabitants of Twenty Five Mile Pond Plantation to incorporate a town to be called New Columbis. On the 22nd of June 1804 the town incorporated with the name of Unity. In 1817, Jeremiah signed a petition for incorporation of a town to be named for President Monroe.

Children of Jeremiah and Polly were:

  1. i.                     Seth S. b. 3 Feb 1802; m. Dorcas __________. Dorcas d. 22 Feb 1887

A Line of Descent from Jeremiah Mitchell

Jeremiah Mitchell born 22 Jun 17791 was the son of John Mitchell and Mary (Vickery) Weston2.  His place of birth will probably always remain a mystery.

Jeremiah’s father, John Mitchell, played an active roll in the capture of the British ships, the Unity and the Margaretta, at a time when the country was still under the rule of England. Those who took part in the battle were subject to be hanged without trial if caught; consequently, many of the participants disappeared from the Marchias area, where the battle took place, into the wilderness of interior Maine. The participants of the battle would not reveal the names of their comrades in battle. One of the leaders of the rebellion was Jeremiah O’Brien and it is entirely possible that our Jeremiah was named in his honor.

The battle took place in June of 1775 and John next appears as the second settler of Twenty-Five-Mile-Pond town (now Unity) in 1782. This leads us to believe that Jeremiah was born some where between the Columbia Falls/Machias area and Unity, possibly in Lee Plantation, now Monroe, Maine. Jeremiah was a signer of an early petition to change the name of Lee Plantation to New Columbia, but Monroe was chosen instead.

Jeremiah married 16 Sep 18023 “Polly” Mary Simmons, daughter of Lebbeus and Mary (Douglas) Simmons, born 23 Jul 17844. Jeremiah ‘s date of death is uncertain: Polly died 15 Mar 18685 in Monroe. They are buried in Mt. Rest Cemetery in Monroe.

Ray and Mary lived on a farm with large acreage in West Appleton, ME. The view of the distant Camden Hills from their home is spectacular. It was a family tradition that my Mom, Dad and I, along with my Knowlton aunt, uncle and cousins spent the 4th of July on the farm in West Appleton with our Bartlett cousins. Aunt Edith and Mary made homemade ice cream and Ray provided home grown peas. My Mom and Dad brought fresh salmon. Ray, Dad and Uncle Dean had built shoots for the sky rockets and all the children had lots of sparklers. Ray’s parents had had the local post office in their home and Ray continued the tradition. Aunt Edith was also the local telephone operator from a switch board in their living room. When I was a child and we journeyed to West Appleton in the spring over the muddy, unpaved roads, we always got stuck and had to have Ray come with his team of horses to pull our car out of the mud. Sadly, Mary had to go into a nursing home in Camden in later years. We were all gathered in West Appleton to celebrate the 70th wedding anniversary of Mary and Ray when we learned that Mary had died in the early hours of that day, their anniversary. Ray was the holder of the Boston Post Cane, as the oldest resident of Appleton, when he died. He was also the town historian.

  5. Dates from Richard Spinney who credits microfilm of the MOCA, Maine Old Cemeteries Association. James Vickery in Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 1, pg 207 mentions illegible, broken grave stones. My mother Inza Boyd Burgess who would at this date, Jan 2005, have been 104 years old and her sister Verna Boyd Knowlton who would have been 102 at this time, both have told me that they remembered seeing Jeremiah and Polly’s grave stones, although they no longer exist. I have a copy of an 1880 rendition of Mt. Rest Cemetery showing the names of those who purchased lots in the cemetery. Lot #34 is shown as belonging to Jeremiah Mitchell. (jbb)
