Notes for JOSEPH NEALLEY:

Joseph and his older brother, John Bowdoin Nealley, moved to Monroe in 1802 before it became an organized town. They each settled on parcels of land across the road from each other west of the future village of Monroe. He married Miss Cynthia Putnam, whose family also lived in Monroe. Theirs was the first marriage between Monroe residents. Their first child was the third white child born in Monroe. At the first town meeting after incorporation, held on March 23, 1818, Joseph Nealley was chosen moderator and a selectman.

Joseph Nealley died after a freak accident during a training session of the local militia in September 1830. A gun burst in the hands of a soldier and a piece of lead struck Mr. Nealley in the temple, inflicting a mortal wound. He lived for about three weeks before succumbing to his injuries. He died on October 16, 1830.
